After tomorrow

I presume that John McCain will have almost wrapped up the Republican nomination after tomorrow (not that I won't still be pushing for Mitt Romney while he's viable). Clearly, efforts by me and other like-minded folks to stop that will not have been effective.

With that in mind, this space's seemingly single-minded focus against McCain will wane. I'll still follow him closely, but there will be no point in hammering on him daily. I've probably turned off enough people that schtick.

What will strike my fancy? Well, college basketball is going strong, so I will write more about it. In addition, baseball is starting soon. Let's not forget the never-ending supply of Netflix DVD's.

The point is that if you get some enjoyment from reading the political stuff here, there will still be some of it. It just won't be so focused on the national presidential race (overall, though, posting will be lighter since we'll likely be out of the Republican presidential primary silly season). For those of you who don't care, on the other hand, you should enjoy this space more (there will be LOTS more movie reviews). Unless you also don't care about my lame opinions on movies and sports, that is.

Meanwhile, enjoy this picture of Rose McGowan from Planet Terror, which I watched this weekend. It was a pretty solid movie with lots of cartoonish violence of zombies dying. Yes, she actually had a chunk of her leg eaten off (I'm not giving away much plot here) and replaced by an automatic weapon:

Random crap

A few random thoughts to replace actual cogent posts:

  • So there were about 3 things I thought of last night to post about, but then I forgot about them. That's mainly a function of my level of busyness (wait, that's not a word) at work right now.
  • I am through with pretty much every new TV show I was going to watch this year (only Heroes remains). The Bionic Woman was the last to go. I just don't have the time or energy to get involved.
  • Jay Cutler was on South Park last night. I mean, not his actual voice, but Stan and Kyle made sport of him at a party. Stan told him (paraphrasing) that he kind of sucked but his dad said he might be good someday. That pretty much sums it up.
  • College basketball has been pretty silly lately. Kentucky losing to Gardner-Webb last night was the latest (and best!) example so far. FU UK!
  • Speaking of, LU's first game is Saturday. I am eagerly awaiting it.
  • The Biggest Loser is losing me. It's starting to turn into the typical reality show that I hate. I may not make it past this season, with all of the backstabbing and whatnot. I have no interest in seeing unpleasant people be jerks to each other.
  • If the writers strike in Hollywood continues for much longer, there will be no 24 this year.

Final thought: Tomorrow (Friday) we are having a work happy hour at Villian's, which is at 649 S. Clark. I recommend anyone in the area to come. We should have a big crowd, and drink specials are pretty good. And from what I hear, they could use the business.

Thoughts on Revenge of the Nerds

After The Biggest Loser last night, Encore was showing Revenge of the Nerds. Sure, it's a comedy classic, and mainly for the subtleties in the movie. However, watching it last night made me realize there a lot of silly plot devices that just don't make sense. For example:

How can a college football team have only about 20 players on it? Only if they had leather helmets, I say.

Also, all white guys on the team?

How can the football coach intimidate the dean the way he does? Any coach who even hinted at that kind of behavior to the dean of a college would be out on his ass and NEVER coach in college again.

Why does Louis' dad drop them off approximately a mile away from their dorm? They have to be able to get closer.

As a corollary, how do ALL of their possessions fit in that trunk, which they can also carry (and thus isn't packed very tightly)?

Walk Of Shame - Saturday, October 6

This morning I made the walk of shame after meeting a girl out for drinks after work. This was a bit unusual, though, since I did it from around 6300 N. LSD. Luckily, it was only a few blocks from the Granville Red Line stop. Since I have nothing but time today, I took the train and then the Fullerton bus, and I made the whole trip in 45 minutes. Not too shabby!

When I got home I went to the store, then ate for lunch a frozen pizza and over a pound of chicken nuggets. Needless to say this made me want to sleep.

After a nap, I'm just getting ready for baseball in a few minutes. In the meantime, who knew that the best game on TV by far is the USF-FAU game on ESPNU. FAU just rolled down the field on the #6 team in the country, and it's not 14-14 with 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. I'm so tired of Florida, Florida State, and Miami that I hope USF becomes a great program and counterweight to them all, too, so I'm rooting for them pull this one out.

Oops! It's 5 PM, time for the Cubs brutal end to their season. Go D-Backs! I know I should be better person about the Cubs, but I'm trying. Old habits die hard, right?

UPDATE: F the D-Backs game. I'm staying with this USF-FAU game. USF's up 7 but FAU is plowing over the USF defense AGAIN. 1:34 left in the 3rd.

UPDATE 2: Chris Young just gave the D-Backs a quick 1-0 on a HR. OK, I'm going picture in picture, baby!

Some random thoughts on the passing scene

($1 to Thomas Sowell for stealing the title to his occasional column of the same theme.)

Clint Howard's performance in The Waterboy solidifies his standing as possibly the 3rd best actor named Clint in Hollywood history. He was also in the Married...With Children episode where Peg wins a bunch of money playing bingo but Al gets too drunk with the rest of NO MAAM to remember to pick her up. And it just took me 15 minutes to find that episode summary.

Since we got all of the premium channels on DirecTV, I find myself watching Beerfest and Idiocracy any time they are on.

My copy of seasons 1 and 2 of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia shipped today from Buy.com. To say I'm excited is an understatement. I can FINALLY give it to my brother to watch. Don't forget, the new season starts Thursday, September 13.

Fubar's last ever party at Janssen is Saturday, and I can feel the electricity in the air...

One of my headlights is out in my car, but I'm not afraid of getting a ticket since all of the Mexicans around here don't use their lights anyway until about 9 PM. They would need roadblocks to ticket everyone for that offense.

The Waterboy just finished. In the 12 minutes until the Republican debate starts, I have a brutal decision to make: CB4 or Spies Like Us (or as Fubar calls it, Fletch). Alas, neither Beerfest nor Idiocracy is on. Spies Like Us wins. A bonus is that both Bernie Casey and Vanessa Angel are in it.

I have been searching for a fall TV preview and have been unable to find one so far. If the Sun-Times doesn't have one on Sunday, I'm going to suspect a conspiracy against me is afoot.

Marlboro sent me a really sweet-looking ashtray in the mail last week. Too bad I don't smoke cigarettes.

The big 33 is coming up on Monday, but I just don't care. Once you get past 30 they are all the same until retirement.

My book queue is up to 14, and I just ordered Prince Of Darkness by Bob Novak. Clearly, I'm not reading fast enough. Even more clearly, I need to stop buying books.
